Empowerment,
inclusiveness & equity
We work with organizers of projects in citizen science, community-based research and other forms of participatory research to co-create resources and facilitate exchange on inclusiveness, equity and empowerment in participatory research. The overall aim is that more people, from more diverse backgrounds, can participate in participatory research activities, shape them according to their wishes, and generate impacts that address their needs.
The working group was set up at the ECSA General Assembly in Geneva, 2018 in cooperation with the Living Knowledge Network for science shops and community-based research. Group members share an interest in increased cooperation, exchange of experiences and development of methods - one of the three strategic pillars in the ECSA strategy. This, we hope, will contribute to strengthening the focus on empowerment among civil society and through the focus and impacts of citizen science activities.

Activity plan
- We are currently co-creating a detailed description of the purpose of activities of this working group – please take a look and contribute!

- We are working on community participation guidelines to establish principles for how we want to work together.
- We share information through our mailing list, including calls for participation, partnerships or publications, job ads, relevant literature, interesting events, etc.
- We hold regular online working group meetings on Zoom to discuss joint activities, learn more about each other’s work and shape how we work together; the agenda / minutes for the meetings are here.
- We organize face-to-face workshops for exchanging of experience and creating resources together.
- We’re building a collection of literature and case studies on empowerment, inclusiveness and equity in citizen science and community-based research. To contribute, please upload relevant material to our collection on GDrive (please observe licenses!) and write a short note on the mailing list.
- We have started the following cooperations projects. In this document you will find all the information about the ones currently running, the past cooperation projects and a template to suggest new ones.
Past achievements
- We invited 17 speakers to give input presentations. You can check the discussions we had in our minutes document.
- We held two workshops during the summer of 2018; the documentation of these can be found here.
- We ran a Zine workshop at the ECSA2022 conference in Berlin. Check the Zine out here.
How to get involved
This working group only makes sense if it is a relevant forum for what our members want to do – please make it so! The chairs and ECSA headquarters will do our best to support you.
- Subscribe to our mailing list to receive information about working group activities and contents posted by other people.
- Share a short description of your project or work through the mailing list, and share material you think will be relevant to people who work in citizen science and community-based research, mostly in Europe.
- Join one of our online meetings for updates on group projects and to learn what other people are working on.
- Give a short presentation (usually 15 minutes, with 15 minutes discussion) in an online meeting on your work, or on a question that bugs you; please contact Claudia or Michael beforehand.
- Join one of our face-to-face workshops.
- Contribute to the collection of literature and case studies on empowerment, inclusiveness and equity in citizen science and community-based research.
- Organize your own activity – online or offline – as part of the working group. You can share your idea through the mailing list and/or get in touch with Claudia and Michael to get started.
- Help moderate the mailing list and organize online meetings from time to time. You are warmly invited to join Michael and Claudia in doing these (and new!) tasks to care for the working group meetings and infrastructure.
- Get in touch with any new ideas, suggestions, questions and comments! We’d love to hear what you want to do together and will see what we can do to make this happen.
