A series of high-level UN meetings and forums are taking place this February – and ECSA is helping to ensure that citizen science remains high on the agenda.

As part of the Citizen Science Global Partnership’s (CSGP) delegation, ECSA members are attending several sessions at these events. This is an excellent opportunity to advocate for citizen science as an effective approach to tackling major environmental issues, from the climate crisis to global biodiversity loss. It is also an avenue into the policy processes that will help to ensure that citizen science gets the support it needs to prosper.

“The UN  has been an excellent partner in supporting the development of citizen science,” says Martin Brocklehurst, who has coordinated the global citizen science delegation at successive UN events. “At UNEA events, we see the value of citizen science recognised by a growing number of Member State Governments and by the UN itself. This has only happened because of the dedicated support and input made by a succession of global citizen science delegations.

“This year is unique,” he continues, “as the event is online, making it even easier for citizen scientists to join key events. There will be citizen scientists on the platform again at this year’s UN Science Policy Business Forum, which is still open for registration.”

Meetings at which ECSA and the CSGP are present include the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (9-11 February), the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment (18-20 February), and the Fifth Session of the UN Environment Assembly (22-26 February).

You can read summaries from each day of the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum on the IISD website.
